spire

this month i have some works in a few group shows, two here in san francisco and one in copenhagen. slightly belated notice for the first of the SF shows ~ We Haven't Felt This Way In Years at Double Punch Gallery ~ the opening event is already past, but the work is still on view through december 10th.

next will be Side 2 Side at FFDG, a brief holiday group showing. no idea what i'm putting in this show yet, but the opening is december 10th from 6-9 pm ~ hope to see you there!

last but not least, i will have some works in Domestic Mash-Up at Wonderland Art Space (WAS Gallery) in Copenhagen. there will be a opening reception on december 11 from 5-10 pm if any DK folks are reading this ~ wish i could be there myself.

(the photo above is of andy goldsworthy's spire and is totally unrelated to anything in this post. i just like the way it looks.)

falling back

i recently received copies of three different publications i've been included in this past year; it feels strange to see work that seems to have been done so long ago in the context of being new, which i guess means this year has flown, as years will do. at any rate, the books in question are quite lovely publications, and i am proud to be part of them.

the first to arrive was The Rest Is Up To You, a collaborative effort between a young boy named cohen morano and 118 artists he admires. beyond admiring the various ways each artist responded to and embellished the work cohen sent them, it's enjoyable to read the occasional commentary provided by either cohen or the artist. this was a great project to be part of; very happy to have the lovely mel kadel's work facing mine!

the second is an australian publication, more a magazine than a book, called King Brown, and it features an interview with yours truly. it's not available in the states, but copies can be obtained online here. it's a beautifully printed volume with many wonderful interviews throughout. my favorite outcome of this interview was receiving an email from an australian asking if i could identify a creature in one of my collages, as he found them on the beach near his home all the time but had no idea what they were (which was glaucus atlanticus, a form of nudibranch).

and last but hardly least, my work can be found within the pages of Art For Obama, a wonderful volume documenting artworks created in support of obama's historic campaign for the presidency.

check them out if you have a chance ~ i just saw "the rest is up to you" on display at green apple yesterday. i'm proud to have been included in each of these fine tomes.

Just This Once

The following text is the statement I wrote for Never Be Sad.

For this show, I wanted to move in a different direction aesthetically and create work inspired by early-mid 20th century surrealist work, with a tinge of Pop. I also was interested in the challenges of integrating text into art, something I believe is difficult to do well in visual art. Last but not least I wanted to create work that is less about a direct narrative and more about the subconscious, and how we operate in the social and environmental worlds around us.

The phrases in these collages are multi-tiered and double-sided; intended to reflect a sort of personal and societal inertia of mind and lifestyle, both in the sense of being frozen, and moving too fast in a direction to change course. I wanted them to be about states of mind and being, in terms of personal and global events; things that happen on a day-to-day basis and things that happen over the courses of our lives. They’re about the decisions we make, and the twists of fate we encounter. They are intended to reflect the multifaceted moments of joy and anxiety, nostalgia and anticipation, which are part of being alive. I wanted them to be open to interpretation as either uplifting, or melancholy.

Disguising these messages as strangely grafted, twisted plantlife works for me in the sense that, the themes I’m addressing are composed of so many different elements; moments, feelings, and phases of life will shift, grow, die, be confusing, complicated, intangible, and difficult to put into words, along with our memories of them and the events connected to them. Creating the phrases as landscapes, or specimens of wildlife, was sort of like isolating an aspect of our internal environments.

I see them essentially as simulacrum of things that sometimes have no real shape.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out to the opening, and everyone who passed along the word about the show.

Extra special thanks to...
The incomparable Fecal Face, who gave this show a lot of love, paying me a studio visit and taking photos of the opening.

The Chronicle, who gave me a lovely mention.

My dear friend Audrey who made a killer playlist for the show (check out her podcasts if you haven't already).

And most especially to my very charming boyfriend Christopher Norris for writing it up as only he could do, and for coming to the show all the way from NYC.
